Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are the only dental specialists recognized by the American Dental Association who complete hospital-based surgical residencies lasting four to six years.

At Newport Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, our team of board-certified surgeons—Ryan Kriwanek, D.D.S., M.D., Ouzhan Kalantari, D.D.S., M.D., Thomas Michaelis, D.D.S., M.D., and Vivian Jui, D.M.D.—bring together more than a century of combined surgical, medical, and dental experience. Their practice is founded on a straightforward commitment: providing personalized, thoughtful care to every patient we serve.

Advanced Surgical Training

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are the only dental specialists recognized by the American Dental Association who complete hospital-based surgical residencies lasting four to six years. The extended six-year track also includes completion of a medical degree (M.D.) and full medical rotations.

This rigorous training includes experience in:

  • Dental implant surgery
  • Bone grafting and jaw reconstruction
  • Facial trauma
  • Corrective jaw (orthognathic) surgery
  • Anesthesia and perioperative management

This comprehensive background allows their surgeons to address both routine and complex cases with confidence and precision.

Scope of Clinical Services

We provide the full spectrum of oral and maxillofacial surgical care, including:

  • Simple and surgical tooth extractions
  • Wisdom teeth removal
  • Dental implants and bone grafting
  • Corrective jaw surgery
  • Diagnosis and management of:
    • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders
    • Oral and facial pain
    • Facial injuries, including maxillary, mandibular, and dental trauma

Anesthesia Expertise

As part of their surgical residency, oral and maxillofacial surgeons receive extensive anesthesia training alongside anesthesiology teams. This allows their surgeons to provide all levels of anesthesia, from minimal sedation to general anesthesia, creating a controlled and comfortable experience tailored to each patient’s needs.

Interdisciplinary Medical Training

During residency, their surgeons rotate through a variety of medical and surgical specialties, including:

  • Internal medicine
  • General surgery
  • Anesthesiology
  • Otolaryngology (ENT)
  • Plastic and reconstructive surgery
  • Emergency medicine

These rotations deepen their understanding of the face, jaw, and oral structures, combining functional, reconstructive, and aesthetic considerations in treatment planning.

“Our mission at Newport Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is to serve our community with the highest standard of care,” says Dr. Ouzhan Kalantari, D.D.S., M.D. “We remain committed to continual learning and to providing care rooted in precision, compassion, and patient trust.”
