In commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the United States, the Moulton Museum will present its summer exhibition, Scenes of the American Revolution: The Augmented Experience, opening June 6 with a public celebration from 11am to 3pm. This exhibition will offer an immersive exploration of the nation’s founding moments and figures through augmented reality and historical interpretation.
Produced in partnership with the Museum of the American Revolution and developed by Histovery, this exhibition uses HistoPad® touchscreen tablets to transport visitors into pivotal moments of the Revolutionary War. Through layered digital reconstructions, historical scenes are transformed into interactive three-dimensional environments, enabling deeper engagement with the past.
“The Revolutionary War exhibit is a chance to step into the world of the brave men and women who made our country a reality 250 years ago,” says Moulton Museum’s Executive Director Dr. Elisabeth Lange. “Leveraging technology to render complete 3D worlds based on meticulous historical research, this exhibition is much more than panels on a wall. It is a window to the past.”
The Moulton Museum’s namesake, Lewis Moulton, had two great-grandfathers from Massachusetts who were early patriots in the Revolutionary War. For this reason, the Moulton Museum decided to host this special traveling exhibition, and is, in fact, the only West Coast museum to do so. To further enhance authenticity, the museum will display a Revolutionary War relic from the Moulton family, which will be publicly presented for the first time and is believed to have been commissioned by George Washington.
“The Moulton Family is rightly proud to be direct descendants of a soldier of the American Revolution, and we wanted to honor that ancestor,” says Lange. “But more importantly, we wanted to give all residents of the local area a chance to touch history and to understand that they are directly connected to it as well.”
As the United States approaches its semiquincentennial, exhibitions such as this play a significant role in public history by bridging the gap between past and present. The use of augmented reality not only enhances visitor engagement but also reflects broader trends in museum practice, where technology is increasingly employed to create meaningful and memorable educational experiences.
