Some businesses begin with a business plan. Danman’s Music School began with a dog bite.
When founder Dan Lefler was 5 years old, he was severely bitten in the face by a neighbor’s dog. Years later, he was given the choice to use the settlement money for plastic surgery or pursue another path. Dan chose music. He bought a shiny black upright piano and a flute, using both to build a career as a performer, songwriter, and educator. That same piano still sits at the center of Danman’s Music School today, where thousands of students and teachers have played it.
After more than 5,000 performances throughout Southern California, including a 25-year residency at a neighboring Dana Point restaurant, Dan noticed an empty space next door and opened the school on a handshake agreement. What began with one musician and one room has grown into a family-owned and operated community of more than 20 instructors serving students of all ages and skill levels.
What makes Danman’s special is its individualized approach. Lessons are tailored to each student’s personality, learning style, goals, abilities, and musical interests. Teachers meet students where they are, whether that means learning a favorite song, developing classical technique, preparing for a performance, or simply building confidence.
That approach works because Danman’s looks for more than talented musicians. It seeks warm, honest, encouraging professionals who specialize in teaching and genuinely care about their students. Many become long-term mentors, friends, and trusted parts of their students’ families.
Housed in one of Dana Point’s original buildings, dating back more than a century, Danman’s feels like a magical vintage wonderland filled with instruments, colorful teaching rooms, records, memorabilia, and decades of stories. It is not a corporate chain. It is a neighborhood gathering place where families are known and music is passed from one generation to the next.
Community is central to everything Danman’s does. The school works with local venues, nonprofits, schools, families, and community partners to create recitals, concerts, camps, and performance opportunities. Through Arts For All, it also helps provide lessons, instruments, and access to music education for children facing financial hardship or disabilities.
