As the final days of summer slip away, a familiar excitement begins to build. Backpacks are filled with fresh school supplies, calendars begin to fill with activities, bedtime routines slowly return, and alarms are set a little earlier each morning. While families prepare for a new school year, something equally important is happening inside our schools. Long before the first bell rings, educators are thoughtfully planning every moment of the first week, not simply to teach lessons, but to create an environment where every child feels welcomed, valued, and ready to learn.
For many parents, the first week of school is about easing back into a routine. Homework is light, major projects haven’t begun, and everyone is finding their rhythm again.
For educators and administrators, however, the first week is one of the most important weeks of the entire year. It is our opportunity to establish the culture of the classroom and lay the foundation for every relationship, every lesson, and every success that follows.
Before students even walk through our doors, we ask ourselves:

The first week is about far more than learning procedures. It’s about helping students discover that they matter. From the first greeting at the door to every classroom activity, we intentionally create opportunities for students to build relationships, develop confidence, and become valued members of a learning community.
