Dana Outrigger Canoe Club

The Ocean is Waiting

By The Ocean is Waiting

On any given morning in Dana Point Harbor, before most of the town has finished its first cup of coffee, you’ll find a crew of paddlers gliding across the water in perfect rhythm. This is the Dana Outrigger Canoe Club (DOCC), a local institution that has been connecting people to the ocean and to each other since 1971.

Founded by legendary waterman Lorrin “Whitey” Harrison, DOCC is rooted in the rich Polynesian tradition of outrigger canoeing, a sport that blends athleticism, teamwork, and respect for the sea. Whitey often summed up that connection simply: “Being on the ocean is life itself.” That philosophy still guides the club today.

While its history is deep, the club’s energy is anything but old. Today, DOCC welcomes paddlers of all ages and experience levels, from youth just discovering the water to seasoned athletes chasing competitive goals.

What sets outrigger canoeing apart is its emphasis on unity. Six paddlers move as one, matching stroke, breath, and intent. At DOCC, that philosophy extends beyond the canoe. Members often describe the club as an ohana, a family, where encouragement flows as freely as the ocean breeze. Newcomers are met not with intimidation, but with open seats and steady guidance.

The club’s novice program launches each February, making it the perfect time for curious locals to give paddling a try. No experience? No problem. The program is designed to teach fundamentals, build confidence, and introduce participants to the culture and camaraderie that defines the sport. Many novices arrive unsure if they belong and leave wondering how they ever lived without it.

Beyond the harbor, DOCC crews compete in races throughout Southern California and beyond, representing Dana Point with pride. Off the water, the club remains deeply involved in community outreach, sharing the sport with underserved groups and reinforcing its commitment to inclusivity and service.

If you’re looking for a new way to stay active, meet people, and reconnect with the natural beauty of our coastline, Dana Outrigger Canoe Club offers something rare: a sport that challenges the body, calms the mind, and builds lasting community. Novice tryouts are currently being held through the end of March.
