A New Year Check-In

Is It Time for Assisted Living?

By Jay Minor

If you’re starting the new year with concerns about whether a parent or spouse is still thriving at home, you’re not alone.

January often brings a fresh perspective. As routines resume after the holiday season, many families begin to more clearly see changes in a loved one’s health, safety, or ability to manage daily tasks. If you’re starting the new year with concerns about whether a parent or spouse is still thriving at home, you’re not alone. Early in the year, many families begin taking their first steps toward exploring assisted living or memory care options.

Signs It May Be Time for More Support

  1. Changes In Hygiene or Appearance. This may be subtle at first but often becomes more noticeable over time.
  2. Unopened Mail or Unpaid Bills. Difficulty keeping up with household responsibilities can indicate cognitive or functional decline.
  3. Weight Loss or Limited Food in the Home. Skipped meals or lack of interest in cooking are important warning signs.
  4. Increasing Forgetfulness or Confusion. Missing appointments or repeating stories may point to memory impairment.
  5. Frequent Falls or Mobility Issues. These pose serious safety risks and often indicate a need for more supervision.
  6. Mood Shifts or Withdrawal. Irritability, anxiety, or withdrawing from activities can signal emotional distress.
  7. A Home That Shows Signs of Neglect. Clutter or incomplete chores often mirror decreasing ability to manage daily life.
  8. Caregiver Burnout. When a spouse or partner becomes overwhelmed, their own health, and the loved one’s safety, may be at risk.

Questions to Ask Yourself

  1. Is your loved one safe alone each day?
  2. Are medications being taken properly?
  3. Is driving still appropriate?
  4. Would help arrive quickly in an emergency?
  5. Is loneliness affecting their emotional state?
  6. Are you feeling more stressed or worried?
  7. Would added support make life more joyful and manageable?

These questions aren’t about reducing independence. They’re about protecting dignity, safety, and well-being.
