Choosing to hire a designer for your project will ensure you achieve desired results while saving you money and avoiding costly mistakes.
Three Benefits of Hiring a Designer:
- Reduce the likelihood of costly mistakes.
- Ensure your vision is cohesive and properly executed.
- Take advantage of trade discounts.
First Step: Choosing a Designer
Interviewing multiple designers ensures you hire someone with whom your personality and communication styles match. Meet with them in your home to hear firsthand feedback on your space. Discuss how you feel about current space and how each area should optimally function for your family.
After The Consultation
Your designer will provide you with a detailed proposal outlining the scope of work. This should include their fee schedule (how they bill) and an overall estimate. Some designers charge for their services via a fixed rate, others hourly, and some have a hybrid billing structure. Many designers have contractors that they work with, which can be very helpful in moving your project along.
If your project entails a remodel this would be the time when you can set up a consultation with the contractor to get an estimate for their services. Designers can think up grand plans all day long, but we need the contractor to guide us and tell us what we can successfully execute while staying within budget.
Once You’ve Selected A Designer
The first part of the design process is what I call the “inspiration phase.” When designing a home, the most important piece is the people who live in the home. Every client we work with is unique in their style. It is my job to determine what aesthetics a client gravitates towards and what feels true to their personality. Once we know the direction we are headed in- off to the races we go!
Is It Worth It?
Clients want to move their project forward but get “paralysis by analysis.” I over-communicate each decision, so the client feels confident in their choices. Home design projects are often a significant financial undertaking, which makes it important to avoid costly mistakes. For example, laying tile in a busy or unflattering pattern could cause the whole design to look a bit busy or off. This would be very costly to fix, so, often, the homeowner lives with it and is not as satisfied with their results.
I have had countless clients tell me they never could have achieved the results they did without the guidance of a designer. If you are on the fence about whether to hire a designer or not, I highly recommend scheduling a consultation to get a better feel for what design services entail and how they may be beneficial to your project.
